No not an act of terrorism, just a controlled bang.
Tethered 5D issues. aka ‘Leopard Canon Issues’
So, welcome to 2nd November 2007 when I first discovered that my newly installed Leopard had an issue with my 5D’s. Basically the problem was when I connected the 5D, click on Start to Download. I get a message ‘Camera is busy and cannot communicate. Clear if camera’s LCD monitor is displayed.’
So after a number of reinstalls of the lovely Canon Eos software I discovered an easy fix.
- Turn on the camera and preview any image on the rear screen.
- Fire up Eos Utility manually – you might want to kill off some of the canon software. Though an automated startup might work if you’re quick enough!
- Clear the previewed image on the LCD on the camera, click to download and it works
This also works for tethered mode. It seems to only effect the Eos 5D and Leopard (on both updates and new installs).
I initially posted these findings on the Chris Marshall Blog. Although the blog didn’t help It provided a resource for the fix to be found in the future.
Thought I’d post it here mainly as a self pimpage! Shameful I know.
Out of Focus 2008, 1D MkIII edition
Well, I’m doing the 1D a disservice. I’m sure in testing it would have proved successful. However, after a number of issues with errors when changing lenses it’s going back to Jacobs. Also some of the body trim/case has started to peel off, this to be honest is a disgrace on a 2 grand camera body (especially as it’s 3 days old and only had 300 odd images put through it).
One other thing I noticed was the inability to focus lock on a subject using Servo mode in low light. I accept that low contrast is always a problem with low light photography, but my 5D seemed to handle that focusing better than the 1D.
Pissed off about the whole thing really, I could get a replacement. But I think a refund and walkaway is the better option. Despite me getting a really good deal (£2150, now £2589 on Jacobs website), I feel it’s time to move on.
Looking back, I’m wondering if the 1D was ever any use to me.
Bollocks
Focus 2008
Difficult to review the show as I didn’t spend a great deal of time there. You see, the other day my mate Chris emailed me saying ‘Nice deals on the 1D going’ well you already know what happened…….
So, I got one.
To explain, on the Canon stand was Dave Newton from Eos Magazine forums (and technical bloke from CPS). So a brief chat about the fix for the dodgy autofocus (which to be fair isn’t an issue for the majority of people, but would like to know it’s fixed). As we spoke Jacobs scrubbed the sign for the 1D mkIII body, it was £2299, then it became £2150 for the last 5 bodies. One other bloke speaking to Dave got one, I followed behind.
So to help soften the blow, I’m having a clear out of stuff. One of the 5D’s is going (newer one) plus I’ve decided to shift a fair amount of my gaming stuff.
No review just yet, I need a few weeks to figure out all the new menus and custom settings. Currently the 1D is partnered with the EF17-40mm f/4 L. The converts to 22.1-52mm because of the 1.3 crop sensor (APS-H) that the camera uses. So it’s a little wider than the 24-105 but 50mm shorter. The camera bag has been adjusted to fit the bulk of the new body in. We’ll see how things work out with it.
Walk by Shooting pt II
As an extension to the project (though not actually published on it) I decided to do a little more of Lancaster circus. Nothing too exciting.
Which way?
