Canon EF15mm f/2.8 Review

Tiny is a word I would first describe the lens. O.k. not as small as the EF50 1.8, but then again what is?.The Lens itself has a solid feel about it. Metal base and hood. Barrel appears to be plastic. A few people on FredMiranda.com have complained about the lens cap or cover in this case. The cap is more like the top off a jam jar to be honest, still it needs to be. Any complicated clamp would make it difficult to use. It’s a simple slide on/off cap. It might wear in time, then I’ll probably complain about it then.So what’s it like then?

At 15mm it’s super wide, 180° viewing angle. So bearing this in mind you now have to think about another aspect of photography. Your body parts. After a brief period of time I’ve discovered how easy it is to get your fingers, arm and legs into a shot with the 15mm.

This lens was one of the first of the original EF lenses when the system was introduced back in 1987. So don’t expect ultra fast USM focusing. In fact the AFD motor takes me back to my old Sigma 28-80. Noisy is the word!

The focusing range is from 0.2 metre to 1 metre (then infinity). So focusing is quite fast. However because of the wide angle, most of the focus points in the centre would be too far and hence it would be focusing on infinity most of the time. So I have found manual focusing on this lens to be much easier. In fact leaving it set to 1 metre and f/8 would give me a range of 0.5m to infinity.

Central (lack of) Trains

As I was working in Birmingham city centre today, thought I’d let the train take the strain. So early start (for me!), got to the station by 07:40 – only to hear of the delay to the 07:47 service. Initially the delay was 25 mins, so i waited for a while. The delay then went to 37 minutes, so refunded my ticket and drove into the city. Walking back to the car, the delay increased to 41 mins. So i’m guessing it gets to an hour then its cancelled.

Have to spend and extra £5 or so on car parking so thanks central trains. We wont mourn your passing when the francise is up. Ars*holes

‘Central trains apologies for the fact that they exist – Another train operator will be arriving soon’

/edit!!!
Seems that Central Trains work a lot better when there is snow about!

Lens Purchase #1

So, eventually decided to take the plunge and ordered the 15mm fisheye.

Shop price £450, Kerso ebay price £390, Kerso non Ebay price £370.

So guess where I got it from!

He seems a very reasonable bloke does Ian. Hopefully should get it soon, depends on the wonderful british banking system.

Canon Image Stabilisation

O.k. I’ve had a 24-105 f/4 L IS lens for a good 4 months now. Never really valued what IS can do. Well tonight as I was bored shitless I’ve decided to have a play. The following 5 shots were all taken at .4″ f/4.0 @105mm.

I think it’s quite clear which shot was taken with IS enabled. I was attempting to keep very still on all images. More so with the latter 4. All images have been sharpened with the same level of USM.

The last shot is the closest to the IS shot, this method was taken by putting both elbows on the desk for stability. It seems to have done a much better job, maybe this could work for some.

Overall, very impressed with IS. I can’t wait to try it on the 300mm f/4.

Job indecision pt 1

O.k. as regular readers (well me) will see, indecision is a current theme. This time work.

Well i’ve been asked for a figure to be taken on as full time staff, I know the pay scale they are offering and its great. Currently is about 10k more than my last permanent position (albiet without a company car – so realistically its more like 7-8k).

So I’m undecided now whether to get employed or stay the way I am.
