So in 2.5 hours what have I done?

Well, backed up my MacBook using Time Machine. Replaced the HDD. Reinstalled OS X, restored Time Machine backup and it’s back to normal now. 🙂

So bigger disk, means more junk.  Yep, may stick VMWare on it and dump and XP/Linux virtual computer on the 2nd partition.   This (250gb – well 230gb) is the largest internal drive I’ve ever owned!  Not bad for £46.54 (Western Digital Scorpio Blue 250gb 540rpm Sata-II WD25000BEVT).  Christ I remember paying £400 for a 20mb Amiga HDD.  Just need to get a cheapo caddy and I can use the MacBook 80gb as an external 🙂

(Though not done system updates yet – still impressed how quickly it’s back to normal!)

Netbook decision aka Am I ready for Linux?

Christmas is a dangerous time for me, usually no one knows what to buy me. I’m happy with this as I always get cash, either that or I choose my own presents. This Christmas is no exception, so whilst I’m awaiting the pre Christmas cash to arrive I’m pondering a Netbook.

I’ve had a play with the Acer Aspire in John Lewis. To be honest it’s not a MacBook running OS X, however the man that is known as Steve Jobs decrees that the glorious Apple will not enter that market (afterall, the fucking fanboys will tell you the MBA or the iPhone is ‘the’ mobile internet platform – twats).

So I go into this knowing it’s not going to be as easy (or indeed as easy as it would equally be on Windows XP).

A number of things are putting my off at present. I know that one is easy to resolve (how to get a 3 mobile USB modem working – should be a piece of piss), others are applications I cannot run on Linux.

2 big showstoppers for me. Photoshop and Lightroom. For a netbook I probably do not need the sophisticated library that Lightroom provides. However it’s raw conversion and editing tools/crop tools are required. As for Photoshop, it’s batch processing and further image manipulation are required.

Now I know with Linux others write similar applications. So lets look at the two rivals.

Ufraw: Seems on the face of it a fairly complex raw processer. It can’t (or i’ve not found how) process in bulk. It will process in turn each image If I open say 20-30 at a time. Still it’s only a raw processor.

Gimp: Advocates of Gimp will tell you it’s as good as Photoshop. Sorry it is not. Whilst it’s a good editor it is not CS3.

So game over? Some would say try LightZone. I’m sure it’s great, but at £145.21 for the Linux version it’s not that great. Especially I have invested in LightRoom already. The more I think about it the more I can’t see myself getting a Linux netbook. If it was just for web use then I’d have one now. But the main requirement for me is a small laptop for photography work. Whilst it has options for photography it isn’t an easy solution.

Looks like this Christmas I really do not know what I want.

So, how dead is your computer?

In terms of my work PC, it’s in a semi state of deadness. Why?

Well, Windows explorer has died and crawled up it’s arse just to annoy me. Normally a reboot would be a good course of action. However the only program that is still working is VMWare. I could reboot it, however i’m not in the office and my 3 VMware sessions are working fine.

As the image illustrates the taskbar is dead, explorer has gone. Though services are running in the background.

I’ll reboot it one day, but as I’m nowhere near it I’ll leave it. VMware is doing the business for me.

Macbook – gone for repair :(

Tis nothing too serious, the Macbook is working fine. However the palm rest area of the keyboard had developed a crack.

(not my Macbook, the spilt is in the same place – but not broken off yet).

So I have no Mac Laptop now, It’s given me a chance to play with Linux on my ‘work’ Toshiba laptop. It runs o.k., but it’s no OS X. Plus it’s a big chunky thing as well. Keyboard feels horrible, that said it is a Toshiba so it will probably never break. Also despite it being of a cheapo plastic construction it’ll probably never have bits flaking off.

Wonder if I can Hackintosh it?

/edit Took it to the Apple Store in Solihull, and they are fixing it for tomorrow 🙂 FOC 🙂

(I did take it back to John Lewis previously as that’s where it came from)

/edit, obviously tomorrow meant Tuesday as they didn’t have the parts 🙁 We’ll see 😐

Dad’s first play with Vista

Slight moan. Dad was using Vista to view photos on media player. When he had finished viewing, he tried to close media player down. Media player didn’t play ball and decided to lock up.

So Dad’s first play with Vista ended up with a Ctrl-Alt Del and kill media player via Task Manager.

I know I’m going to get so many calls regarding that piece of shit call vista. If it pisses me off too much I’m going to stick XP on it.

That Media Player front end is no Front Row
