Space

Disk space to be precise. So this evenings debate is storage related. I have a couple of 2TB Freecom FW800 devices (upgraded Freecom Datatank 800 – added 2x1TB drives to each box – great kit, but i’ve reached the limits of the chipset).

Current one is setup as Raid 1 (Mirror) and other is setup as 2 drives. The first disk is used as my primary drive for images (hence the reason for Raid) and is backed up to the 2nd drive. The 2nd drive is also used Time Machine and other storage.

Now disk 1 is down to 80gb spare, the backup volume slightly less. The other volumes aren’t important, but still utilised.

A temporary solution might be to setup the Raid disk as Raid 0 (data spanned across the 2 internal disk) – however this isn’t ideal as it’s not redundant (no idea why its classed as Raid then?) – I’ve probably have to set the backup disk to be the same, plus get another external drive for other data.

Now owning a Thunderbolt enabled Mac I’m tempted to get a Thunderbolt device. Sadly they are stupid prices (thanks Intel/Apple!), even worse prices if I want Raid with 4TB (mirrored will be 2TB). So chances are this is a none starter.

The one single drive device i’m tempted with is the LaCie d2 USB 3.0 3TB Thunderbolt – priced at a stupid £230-250 – still it’s Thunderbolt, plus it’s USB3 which might be handy for the Mac purchase.

A Western Digital 3TB USB2/3 drive however is around £120, plus the Lacie is a Lacie – so you can probably expect the drive to die.

Rant over – chances are i’ll end up with something completely different.

Plugins – Time is almost up

After a very quick 2 weeks time is almost up for the Nik Collection plugin trial (15 Days – though I do have a plan to extend this by using my Macbook and possibly a VMware Mac!). So what have I done, well dabbled a little bit – sadly unless you have a bit of spare time 15 days probably translates to maybe 3-4 hours per week (hence my plan to extend time a bit). I’ve really not had a chance to dive into the individual settings on any of the plugins – just mostly using the custom presets.

So below is a small selection of what I’ve looked at (Click on the links for the larger flickr hosted images – 3000x1000px). Oh and apologies for the mainly aircraft pictures 😉

First up is Viveza (Selectively adjust the color and tonality of your images without complicated masks or selections. – text taken from the Nik Collecion site as it’s probably the best description of the plugin).

Nik Test - Cessna

Quite a nice effect can be created to enhance a relatively dull image – here I’ve only adjusted the Structure slider to 75% (I’ve found Structure to be quite a handy tool on a number of plugins).

Viveza again

TSR 2

This time using it for a black and white conversion (without wanting the effects of Silver Efex) – whilst this looks nice, this is probably achievable in CS6 or LR4

Next up is Colour Efex Pro 4

Track and Field

The number of filter effects are too numerous to list, but a quick Polarisation (to bring up the detail in the field) and fog effect look quite good. The Polarisation most likely could be achieved in CS6/LR4 and fog possibly in CS6 using a white graduated layer faded in. Still this plugin saves you the time in doing this (though I an relatively inexperienced in CS6 – so it might be an easy action to create).

Next the dreaded HDR Efex Pro 2 (24 – Outdoor 2 filter applied).

Silver Wings

Why dreaded, well cos mostly HDR looks awful – so does this image to be honest – but if I want the really horrible HDR effect I know where to go. In fairness, it does it simply and you can customise each filter so it doesn’t look like HDR (probably the best HDR method!).

Now it’s time to get serious – Silver Efex Pro 2 (005 High Structure – Harsh filter)

Lone Tree Version 2

When you mention Nik plugins, Silver Efex seems to get talked about – and after a brief play I can understand. The standard filters have enough to keep most happy (especially certain northern based photo societies).

Colour Efex Pro 4 again (Various filters added)

Diesel Blue

Possibly a little overdone this one, but it’s a combination of stacked filter effects. Whilst this image isn’t great – it the process is one to get excited about.

So I’ve missed out, Dfine 2 (Noise Reduction) and Sharpener Pro 3 (errrrr, it sharpens!) – these two I’ve not used yet. I’m sure they’ll be a good as the rest if you need them.

As for the collection, well I’ve seen what they can do and for $150 for the whole set they are a bargain (there are some money off codes – if you search) You can find the plugins available on the www.niksoftware.com website. All available in one package to try for 15 days (for use in Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and Apple Aperture – possibly others as well, but I’ve not fully checked)

Spectrum30 day -4

So now the end is near etc,

Right I know I said all day, but I’m thinking ‘1982’ day you know when I was at school. So it’s going to be school hours, hence I’ll be clocking off early.

16) Lunar Jetman – 2nd outing on the Spectrum for Jetman. This time with a vehicle. Now I always found this game tricky. I still do!

17) Sabre Wulf – now if this loads I’ll be surprised – as I type it ‘R Tape Loading error’ appears – sounds like a strangled cat (not that I have – just guessing). So I’ll try again. After years of not being used I guess it might be a bit of tape stiffness – a few FF and Rew might fix it. – Failed 🙁 Shame as it my favourite Ultimate game

18) Knight Lore – Sabre man returns, this time part man part wolf. The pioneering isometric game play was revolutionary at the time. Never got too far on the game in ’84, still not got any further!

So that’s your lot*. Actually quite tired considering I was just playing games all day.

* I do plan to post spectrum30 day ‘thoughts’ – so keep an eye out.

Spectrum30 day -3

We’re on a roll with Durell now (other games manufacturers are available), well I think we are…..

12) Turbo Esprit, not the best start as the first side fails. Now trying the other side which is the fast load – same result – bugger – I wanted to play this 🙁 2nd tape now tried and failed. So removed Interface One. It worked. After all that I can’t be bothered with Turbo Esprit. Still had a blast around the city in it. Crashed into a few things.

High Speed

13) Scrabble Redux (no, not a limited edition – but 2nd attempt with the tape/interface one changed) – It loads! And i’ve spent a happy hour or so on it loosing badly.

Still loosing it!

14) Manic Miner (again) – loads now. Played a few levels, come the conclusion Matthew Smith was a genius.

Struggling

15) Jet Set Will (again) – Tape 1 fails on both sides, trying with reserve tape. The reserve works. So Matthew Smith – Genius, well he is. The thought that went in to levels, sprite collision and design are frankly still brilliant nearly 30 years on. One day I’ll sit down and try to complete the game.

Probably about to die!

Spectrum30 day – 2

Next up…

5) Match Day II. An enhancement on the original? Well I’m not too sure, the ‘better’ graphics dont add much to the experience and the diamond deflection system doesn’t really add anything either. If anything the latter seems to add uncertainty to the game. Still a worthy update to the classic.

On me head son

get in there

6) Saboteur. Failed to load 🙁
7) Saboteur II. Failed to load 🙁
8 ) Combat Lynx – Loaded – but then didn’t work 🙁
9) Flight Simulation (Psion), Yay, one works. This brings back memories, I actually did prefer the ZX81 version but today is the Spectrum day so I’ll forget that. It’s a tricky thing attempt to fly something that’s not overly responsive. But a fun little flight sim (yes I crashed).

Approach

10) Harrier Attack! – Tempting fate with another Durell tape! But this one loads! A quick loader as it’s a 16k game, released with the country still celebrating the glorious win that was the Falklands Conflict. It’s a simple game, played the same way as the defender arcade game – but with the UK twist. It’s not a forgiving game, shot down and you’re gone (though you can eject!).

11) Scrabble – loads, then fails 🙁

Right onwards to next post……
