Birmingham

Tis a new category on the blog, why I hear no one scream.

Well, I live here so might as well use my skills as a moaner blogger to talk about the great city of Brum.

I’ll probably complain as well.

Canon Eos 5D Mark II, let the moaning begin!

EOS 5D Mark II

The full frame EOS 5D Mark II combines outstanding resolution with 3.9 fps shooting and superlative high ISO performance. The addition of Full HD movie recording expands the boundaries of photography.

Features

  • 21.1MP full frame CMOS sensor
  • DIGIC 4 processor
  • ISO range expandable to 25600
  • Full HD (1080, 30fps) movie recording
  • High-res 3.0” VGA LCD with Live View
  • 3.9fps JPEG shooting up to card capacity
  • 9-point AF + 6 Assist AF points
  • Magnesium alloy body

21.1 Megapixel full frame CMOS sensor
For the ultimate in creative shooting, the EOS 5D Mark II features a full frame CMOS sensor (36mm x 24mm). With no cropping or magnification effects, enjoy a true wide angle experience through the large, bright viewfinder. Redesigned pixels minimise noise, while a 21.1 Megapixel resolution surpasses the standards demanded by the leading picture agencies.

DIGIC 4
Canon’s DIGIC 4 works with the EOS 5D Mark II’s image sensor to deliver outstanding reproduction of colours and subtle tonal gradations. DIGIC 4 also delivers split-second start-up times, Face Detection AF in Live View mode, and additional HD movie recording.

High ISO
For handheld shooting in low light, the EOS 5D Mark II offers ISO speeds of up to 6400. For dark scenes where using flash is undesirable, this can be expanded to an incredible ISO 25600.

Full HD movie recording
The EOS 5D Mark II complements outstanding still imaging capabilities with Full HD (1080) video recording. Users can even shoot video to memory card without losing the ability to capture still images. An HDMI connection allows High Definition playback of footage and images on an HDTV.

3.0” High Resolution LCD
The 3.0” Clear View LCD features 920,000 dot resolution, wide viewing angle and dual anti-reflective coatings – allowing ultra-detailed image review in a variety of conditions. Live View displays real-time images on the LCD, offering three types of auto focus: Quick AF, Live AF, and Face Detection Live AF, which locks onto faces detected in the frame.

Up to 3.9 frames per second
The EOS 5D Mark II offers continuous shooting at 3.9 frames per second. When shooting JPEGs to a UDMA card, maximum burst is limited only by card capacity.

9-point AF + 6 Assist AF points
Precision auto focus is assured by Canon’s AF system, which employs 9 selectable points and 6 Assist AF points.

EOS Integrated Cleaning System

Canon’s built-in dust prevention system offers three ways of guarding images against the effects of dust: reduction of internal dust generation; an in-camera sensor cleaning mechanism; and the ability to map stubborn dust spots for removal with Digital Photo Professional software (included).

Durable, compact design
With a magnesium alloy construction, environmental protection and shutter durability of 150,000 releases, the EOS 5D Mark II is equally suited to location or studio work.

Bullet points for the moaning fuckers to use as a reason not to get the 5D MkII:

  • Only 3.9 fps – FFS I’ll have to get a 50D now cos it’s slightly quicker.
  • Too many MP – I mean I’ll have to get a bigger PC
  • I have a Camcorder already I don’t need this
  • Only 9 AF points
  • Doesn’t focus at f8, but neither does the 50D, but I’ll still get that
  • No built in flash – the killah feature – I’ll have to get a 50D
  • Not totally waterproof.  I need to use it in a bath.
  • Those photosites/microlenses cant resolve the detail enough.  The image quality will be poor.  I have to by a 10D instead (actually no idea what the fuck I’ve just wrote is).
  • It’s not a 1D in a 5D shell, as a protest I’ll have to buy a 50D
  • RRP is tooooooo expensive
  • Only one memory card slot.
  • It doesn’t have the 1D focusing technology
  • Right, can we start bitching about the 5D MkIII yet?
  • Ad nauseam

The above comments do not represent my thoughts, just the thoughts of the mind numbing fuckwits that moan about features they are never going to use whilst producing completely shite HDR imagery of exciting stuff like bins and dog turds.

New feature*

*for me only.

However, quite happy as i’ve been playing with PHP to modify my SCphoto uploader.

Added the feature to select which gallery I want to use, also increased the capacity for upload to 6.

Things to add in the future:

  • Option to specify a folder within a location (mainly for Projects folder)
  • Option to delete images
  • Option to modify/create html pages

Also looking to restrict directory listing, this is easy to do via a blank index.html file.  However I’d like the option to list via a password option.

Bag rant

Bloody indecision (again). I thought I had a bag chosen, but no I find another. This time its the Lowepro Fastpack series.

This bag seems to offer a better camera solution, but it seems to be at the expense of the day pack above.

So, 2 solutions (both around £70 online) but both are flawed somehow. The Rover 2 AW has a smaller camera section, but larger above. Also there is no real separation between the 2 compartments on the Rover. Bit of a piss if something leaks. Mind you neither really have water storage in mind.

So if I have time I’ll find a retailer who has the Fastpack series in stock, just to try (again).

No doubt I’ll find another bag to look at soon. I’m wondering why I bothered with the Vertex 200, though that’s a great bag for events – just not hiking and carrying non camera related stuff.

Mmmmmm, not too sure if the Fastpack has an AW cover – handy for the lakes!

Shopping for bags

Well, I can’t exactly call it shopping as I only visited one shop. However, web only prices is the subject of todays rant.

Jacobs, have a bag I’m interested in for £69.99 on their website. Now you’d think you could buy it in store for this price, but no you cannot. It’s web only. Why the fuck don’t they shut up all the shops then. After all a sale is a sale, I refuse to buy it from the store when it’s £89.99 when I can save £20 buy going online.

I didn’t try Jessops as they are shit.

(I have been on Vodka this evening)
