Back to Mac(mini) aka me and failing tech

So I’m back where I started. And to be fair it wasn’t a bad solution. Afterall the MacMini is capable for use with all my Photography work, any video stuff I throw at it plus it also runs Halflife 2 on Bootcamp (well I’ve not put bootcamp back on yet – but it did).

First thing I notice, or don’t notice is the glossy screen of the iMac. My old but matte Samsung SyncMaster 215tw (which I forgot cost £368!!!!!!) is still perfect for me. I has one fairly unnoticeable dead pixel, but other than that it’s great.

As for the Mac element of the setup I do notice it’s a little slower, but mostly that’s down to the HDD. The Mini comes with a 120gb 5400rpm laptop HDD. £53 will speed this up for me – Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB 7200RPM SATA-II 16MB Cache – OEM WD3200BEKT, so I might look at that. In fact the only reason I didn’t update the HDD was the stick on temperature sensor inside the Mini. I wasn’t brave enough to move it. Still it will be a little underpowered compared to the iMac, but I can live with it.

Can I live without the iMac – yes, it was a superb bit of kit. However it’s design had flaws and the overall QC of the product was a let down. I may buy the Magic Mouse though. The Wireless keyboard was nice, probably because it’s new and not worn like my wired flat full sized keyboard. But really wireless keyboard when you’re infront of the computer? Seems a bit more style driven than anything else.

Right there you go.

I’m getting £825 back, some I’ll use for the Velux blinds. The rest will probably go on Barclaycard.

iFail

So the iMac is on the verge of being returned. A few minor, but annoying issues:

  • Dead Pixel – not a lot that can be done about this, but annoying though.
  • Dust on the LED backlight screen
  • Dust on the inside of the glass panel
  • High pitch squeak
  • Occasional flicker (after a number of hours)

So just a few issues then.  Apparantly I have 28 days to return it to John Lewis,  providing it’s in a sellable condition.  Which of course it will be when I return it.  I’ll leave it up to John Lewis to morally decide if they can resell it.  Most of the issues listed appear to be general faults with the new iMac so maybe they can resell it.  Others probably aren’t as fussy as me.

Still a bit sad as I like the product.  Back to the old MacMini then.  I’ll miss the magic mouse and the touch of a new keyboard.  Have just reinstalled Leopard and Snow Leopard back on to the mini, restored the data from my iMac.  Now in the process of zeroing data on the iMac HDD.

Look out for the iMac reboxing video soon (mainly to counter the unboxing videos)

/edit. Took it back and got the refund. Well the refund was issued, but because of UK Banking being the worlds slowest I should get it back around Wednesday.

DAB and loft conversions (or maybe general DAB quality)…..

….not the best idea. My old DAB set was a fairly happy bunny, often getting signal strength in the high 90’s. However the time came to move upwards. Into my nice new (and almost complete) loft. Big problem is the foil insulation around the all the walls. This reduced my quality a bit………

Very Poor

I was prepared, so I borrowed Dad’s DAB…..

Quite Poor

Better, but still a bit of Dr Who alien warbling appeared. Aerials on these devices are a bit hit and miss, you extend them and signal gets worse. extend to an angle that hits you in the face and it improves. On my Evoke-1 I used an external aerial for a while, but that progressively got worse. So in the end found the built in extension aerial was better. So where now? I like my old set but really hate the garbled/warbling mess it produces on occasion.

I could look to source a better external aerial, which may be the next logical step. I was intending to update my DAB set, but frankly it’s a no brainer as my Dad’s DAB is fairly new and the signal is poor still. I do fine it strange my DAB clock radio actually sounds o.k. though.

Next option would be Internet Radio. But the big problem here is bandwidth. How much will streaming take up, plus most devices seem to wireless which can be a pain with regards to signal strength.

Reviews

Just a random pondering……

When a website reviewer becomes well know, does it make the reviews irrelevant?

Just noticing things on the web, certain products get released and certain people slate them, their main rival produces a product and it’s praised.
