Hot on the heals of the last quarterly competition it’s the president’s plaque. A print and digital themed competition, this year it’s Wildlife.
I was going to enter a couple of Robin images from the depths of my Lightroom library, but I accidentally showed them to the club whilst demonstrating the club’s new website. So I decided to try a bit of nature in my back garden…..
No prints for me on this one as I’ve not got anything ready.
Time for my image selection for the Mono competition.
I was looking to get a couple of images printed, but I’ll rely on my store of prints as I’m probably pushing it to get anything sorted for next weeks deadline for prints.
First up are my digital entries:
The following image is a panoramic of 3 images taken handheld with my X-Pro2. The mono works better than the colour (handy for this comp) and the fact it’s fairly clear of people is a bonus.
The Selfridges image is a a quick shot taken on my lunchtime walks around Birmingham. This was a quick grab shot of the usual Birmingham landmark, but with a different focal point. I was looking to get a silver print of this, but I don’t think I’d have the time to get it in for the competition – so it’s a digital for now.
And for my print entries…..
I love the seaside and I especially love long exposures. Out of all my silver effect prints this one has been my favourite.
Another one from my lunchtime walks – I’m not sure what a judge will think of the bit of nature poking it’s way in on the bottom right – we’ll see. And if it’s mentioned then maybe an edit and reprint might be an option for the 4th quarterly. Maybe a subtle title like ‘Nature vs Architecture’ will sway it
Both prints are sliver based ones – The may make a re-appearance for the final round of the quarterly competition.
No not that euro thing, the 2nd Quarterly at YPS – A bit of a mixed bag for me One print was Commended (possibly highly commended – i really lost count as the judge gave out so many of them). Digital was better as I scored a 2nd place with my Chesterton image.
The tables are quite tight at the moment as both print and digital are separated by 3-4 points amongst the top 4.
It’s the John Bate competition on Tuesday so no points up for grabs, we’ll wait and see what the judge thinks.
It’s that time again, we’ve not even had the 2nd Quarterly yet – but the hand in is almost upon us for the John Bate competition. So leaving the disappointment of the 3 of a kind and Rose Bowl behind here’s another 4 images for the judge to view.
First up is a the digital section.
My first image (Fast Spin) is a slow shutter shot of a ride at Paignton.
The second image is an old Canon shot of the Lake District (Wast Water way I think) – it’s been processed a little using the Orton effect – so we’ll see what the judge makes of it. The image uses a layer, which I know John Bate never did – despite some of his complex creations.
For the print section I’m mixing up a silver paper and traditional mono print again.
The first image (Sea of Discs) shows an undulating wave pattern, with the added bonus of a Birmingham gull.
The second print (Escapism) is the just a simple look up at fire escapes in Birmingham City Centre.
Results:
Well, the digital was nothing to write home about as neither scored anything.
Prints did much better, escapism was commended and Sea of Discs came first.
So after a fairly unsuccessful 3 of a kind and Rose Bowl its time for another one.
This time it’s the 2nd Quarterly – first up a couple of prints……
Next up – a couple of recent digital images.
Digital always seems to be a difficult one to master as my images tend not look as good compressed, but we’ll see – it’s still early days and having some points on the board is always good.
